TL;DR
- Yes, you can connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify. The native Shopify plugin in ChatGPT's plugin directory is the path for catalog, orders, and discount codes. Ads and analytics jobs go to Metaflow, not a third-party MCP.
- The Shopify plugin lets your Dot read products, manage inventory, create discount codes, and pull analytics. It cannot publish ad campaigns inside Meta or Google, those platforms have no first-party plugin yet.
- Custom Rules govern every action your Dot can take. You can allow, block, or require approval per action type. Background proactive research is read-only by design.
- Setup takes under 3 minutes via the plugin path. Install the Shopify plugin in ChatGPT, authenticate with your store, and your Dot has live access to your catalog and orders.
- Dots launched September 29, 2026. They run on GPT-6 Astra with their own cloud computer and work 24/7 even when you close the app.
How to Connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify
OpenAI launched Dots, always-on ChatGPT agents, at DevDay on September 29, 2026. Within days, Shopify merchants started asking the same question: how to connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify to offload product management, order checks, and content updates to an agent that works around the clock.
The short answer is: you can connect your Dot to Shopify right now using the official Shopify plugin in ChatGPT's directory. There are also two alternative paths, an MCP-based connector for intermediate setups and a custom API for developers. This guide covers all three, with step-by-step instructions, a permissions breakdown, test prompts, and troubleshooting for each method.
Shopify is one row of the plugin list: orders and inventory in, discount codes on approve.
Connect Shopify only if the decision names a recurring commerce job.
What You Need Before You Learn How to Connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify
Before you learn how to connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify, make sure you have these three things:
- A ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium account. Dots are available on Pro ($100/month) in eligible markets outside the UK, EEA, and Switzerland, and on Business Premium ($100/user/month) in all supported regions. Enterprise workspaces can enable a beta when an admin approves it. Free and Plus plans do not include Dots yet.
- A Shopify store where you are the owner or a staff member with app-install permissions. The connection authenticates through OAuth, so the person setting it up needs admin or app-management access.
- The ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. You create your first Dot in the desktop environment. After setup, you can message it from mobile, Slack, or Teams.
Your first Dot is included in your plan at no extra cost. Once you have created it, give it a name, let it introduce itself, you are ready to connect Shopify.
Method 1, Shopify Plugin: How to Connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify Natively
This is the fastest way to learn how to connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify with zero middleware. The Shopify plugin has been available in ChatGPT's plugin directory since 2025 and supports Dots natively:
| Step | Where | What you do | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ChatGPT (desktop) | Open your Dot's settings, go to Plugins | 15 sec |
| 2 | Plugin directory | Search for "Shopify" | 10 sec |
| 3 | Plugin directory | Click "Install" on the Shopify plugin | 10 sec |
| 4 | Browser | Log into your Shopify store and authorize OAuth | 60 sec |
| 5 | ChatGPT | Ask your first Shopify question | 30 sec |
Step-by-step detail:
- Open ChatGPT on your desktop or browser and navigate to your Dot. Click on its settings menu and select Plugins.
- Browse or search the plugin directory for Shopify. The official plugin (developer: Shopify, version 4.1.1) handles store admin, custom data, customers, developer tools, storefront GraphQL, and more than 20 skill endpoints.
- Click Install. A browser window opens asking you to log into Shopify.
- Authenticate with your store credentials and approve the OAuth permissions. The plugin now has a connection to your store.
- Return to your Dot and ask: "What products are in my Shopify store?" If it returns live data, the connection is active.
Note: The same plugin connection works for your Dot, regular ChatGPT conversations, and ChatGPT Work. Permissions are shared across all surfaces.
If you want the Dot to see Google Ads or Meta Ads next to Shopify, do not add a third-party MCP bridge. Add the Metaflow plugin in ChatGPT and connect those accounts in Metaflow. The Shopify plugin stays for catalog and orders. Ads jobs go to AI agents for Google Ads and AI agents for Meta Ads.
Method 3, Custom API: How to Connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify with Developer Access
For developers who need full control, OpenAI's API can connect directly to Shopify's Admin API (GraphQL or REST). This is not a no-code setup, but it is the most flexible option if you need full control over how to connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify at the API level.
- Generate an Admin API access token from your Shopify admin under Settings > Apps and sales channels > Develop apps.
- Build a lightweight backend (Node.js, Python) that authenticates with Shopify and exposes the endpoints your Dot needs.
- Register the backend as a custom action in your Dot's environment via the ChatGPT app controls.
This method requires ongoing maintenance and is overkill for most merchants. Use it only when you need custom logic, for example, a Dot that cross-references Shopify inventory with warehouse data and automatically adjusts stock levels.
What Your Dot Can See and Do in Shopify
Once you understand how to connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify, knowing what your Dot can, and cannot, do is critical for setting the right permissions.
Discount codes are a change. Set allow, approve, or block before the first code.
The message that follows a code is a Klaviyo draft, not a send: Dots for email.
Shopify Plugin Permission Breakdown for How to Connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify
| Capability | Can Read | Can Change | Requires Approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Products | Title, description, price, inventory, images, SEO fields | Price updates, inventory adjustments, SEO titles and meta descriptions | Yes, for price and inventory |
| Orders | Order list, customer details, fulfillment status | Fulfillment status, notes | Yes |
| Customers | Name, email, order history | — | — |
| Discounts | Existing discount codes | Create new discount codes | Yes |
| Collections | Product collections | Add/remove products from collections | Yes |
| Pages/Blog | Blog posts, pages, content | Page and post content | Yes |
| Analytics | Sales, traffic, product performance summaries | — | — |
Custom Rules are your safety net. Inside your Dot's settings, you can configure rules that:
- Allow a specific action to run automatically (e.g., reading product data)
- Require approval before an action executes (e.g., changing prices or creating discounts)
- Block an action entirely (e.g., deleting products or modifying financial records)
Dots also run proactive research in the background when you are not actively working with them. During proactive research, the Dot uses only read-only tools, it cannot change anything in Shopify or send messages without your approval.
Test Prompts to Verify Your Connection
After you complete the setup, run these prompts to confirm your Dot has live Shopify access:
- "Which Shopify store am I connected to?"
- "List my 5 bestselling products this month and show me their SEO titles."
- "Which products have no meta description?"
- "Show me orders from the last 7 days and highlight any that need fulfillment."
- "Create a 20% discount code called FALL-SALE for all products." (should trigger an approval request if you have that rule set)
If any prompt returns your real store data (or an approval request for write actions), the connection is working.
Troubleshooting Your Shopify-Dot Connection
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Dot says it cannot access Shopify | Reinstall the plugin in ChatGPT's plugin directory and reauthorize OAuth |
| The plugin is installed but returns stale data | Ask your Dot to refresh: "Check my Shopify products again with live data" |
| Order data is missing | Order scope was not granted during install. Disconnect and reinstall the plugin, approving all permission scopes |
| Custom Rule blocks a necessary action | Open your Dot's Custom Rules and adjust the action from "block" to "require approval" |
| Proactive research does not seem active | Proactive research runs in the background when the Dot is idle — it is not instant. Give it a few hours after setup |
| Dot tries to change product pricing without asking | This means no Custom Rule covers price changes. Add a rule: "Require my approval before changing any product price in Shopify" |
| The plugin does not appear in the directory | Ensure you are on a Pro or Business Premium plan. The plugin directory is not available on Free or Plus |
| I'm in the UK/EU and cannot access Dots | Dots on Pro are not yet available in the UK, EEA, or Switzerland. Business Premium works in all supported regions — ask your workspace admin to set up a Business account |
What Dots Cannot Do in Shopify (Yet)
Several limitations are worth knowing before you invest heavily in your setup:
There is no Metaflow plugin on the Shopify send path. The Shopify plugin stays the store; a person ships the change.
- Dots cannot delete products or process financial transactions. This is by design, OpenAI reserves sensitive operations (password changes, destructive deletes, financial actions) for the human user.
- Background proactive research is read-only only. Your Dot cannot take autonomous write actions during background research. Every change waits for an explicit approval signal.
- Dots run on GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI held back the GPT-6.1 Astra upgrade because it fell short on scope and authorization controls, according to Bloomberg's coverage of DevDay. The shipped 6.1 model (Sol) matches Astra's speed and cost but not its full capability.
- Plugins are platform-specific. The Shopify plugin does not automatically share context with a HubSpot or Canva plugin. Your Dot can use them in sequence, but they do not form a unified API.
How to Disconnect Your Dot from Shopify
To revoke your Dot's Shopify access:
- In ChatGPT, open your Dot's settings, go to Plugins, find the Shopify plugin, and click Disconnect.
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps and sales channels, find the ChatGPT app, and click Uninstall.
The Dot loses access immediately. No data remains in ChatGPT after disconnection, Shopify data is fetched live and is not stored on OpenAI's servers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect multiple Dots to the same Shopify store?
Yes. Each Dot in your account can use the same installed plugins, including Shopify. Permissions are shared across all your Dots. If one Dot has approval rules for price changes, all Dots inherit those rules.
Does my Dot need its own Shopify login?
No. The Shopify plugin uses OAuth scoped to your ChatGPT account. Your Dot authenticates through your stored credentials without the password being exposed to the model.
Can my Dot create Shopify discount codes automatically?
Only if you set the Custom Rule to Allow for the action. By default, creating discounts requires your approval. This is recommended, an agent generating unlimited discount codes could have real financial impact.
Is Shopify data stored on OpenAI's servers?
No. The plugin fetches data live from your Shopify store on request. During proactive research, the Dot reads live data but does not copy or store it. OpenAI does not train on Business or Enterprise workspace data by default.
Does the connection work on mobile?
Yes. After you set up the plugin on desktop, your Dot can use the Shopify connection when you message it from ChatGPT mobile, Slack, or Teams.
What happens to my Shopify connection if I downgrade my ChatGPT plan?
If you drop from Pro or Business Premium to a plan without Dots, your Dot becomes inactive. The Shopify plugin and its connection remain installed but inaccessible until you upgrade again.
Why This Matters for Your Marketing Stack
Knowing how to connect ChatGPT Dots to Shopify is more than a technical trick, it is a first step toward running an always-on commerce operation. A Dot that monitors your product catalog for SEO gaps overnight, flags out-of-stock items before they become customer complaints, and drafts promotional discount codes for your morning review is doing work that previously required a human to log in, check, and act.
At Metaflow, we work with marketing teams to build governed AI workflows that connect tools like Shopify, ad platforms, and analytics into agent-run systems. The same guardrails we apply to AI agents in marketing, approval chains, scope limits, human-in-the-loop review, apply directly to how you configure your Dot's Custom Rules for Shopify. For a deeper look at setting those boundaries, see our guide on marketing agent guardrails and the broader framework for AI-assisted automation and governed workflows.
The three paths in this article, native plugin, MCP connector, and custom API, give you options whether you run a single-store operation or a multi-brand enterprise. Start with the plugin path: it is free beyond your ChatGPT subscription, takes minutes to set up, and gives your Dot a live connection to the data that matters most for your store.
OpenAI launched Dots on September 29, 2026. Today is October 4, 2026. The agentic shift in commerce is already here, and the fastest way to get started is connecting your Dot to Shopify right now.
